February 2024 Drill

Updated: Jun 27

The February drill took place from 10-11 February 2024 at the Great Lakes Naval Base.

This month, we started our communication quarter. On Saturday, cadets covered Semaphore and Morse Code Basics, as well as the history and use of signal flags. On Sunday, cadets participated in the Semaphore Competition, Morse Code, and Phonic Alphabet Activities.

Cadets also welcomed a Guest Speaker, who shared JROTC scholarship information with the Sea Cadets.

Cadets also practiced marching and Closed Order Drill and had a Cadence Competition.

All February photos have been uploaded to Facebook. Cadets learned Morse code, Flags, and Semaphore. They also participated in the Cadence Competition, with Indoc taking First place and Charlie Company taking second.

MARCH DRILL will take place on 3/9-10. In March, we will continue learning about communication methods and expect a visit from the Coast Guard. The Indoc (a company with recruits who joined in November-March) will start the mandatory Recruit Orientation to prepare them for summer training.

APRIL DRILL will occur in the Janesville, WI area on 4/13-14 and will be an overnight drill. You will drop off your cadets at the RCRPC Range - 10853 N Milton Rd, Milton, WI 53563 by 0900 on Saturday, April 13, and pick them up at 1400 on Sunday, April 14. Cadets will learn firearm safety and how to handle a rifle and a pistol at this drill. We will also host marksmanship qualifications for all our cadets. Cadets 13+ will use small caliber rifles and pistols; cadets 12 and under will use air rifles and air pistols. At this drill, the recruits will also continue their recruit orientation.

Cadets will spend the night in the Masonic Lodge. Ensure each cadet has a sleeping bag, a cot (or an inflatable mattress), a small backpack with PJs or PT clothes (appropriate for sleeping), and a hygiene kit. NOTE: Due to the extended time and increased travel commitment involved in this drill, a cadet's attendance score will not be adversely affected if they cannot participate.

The food for this drill is $25 instead of the regular $12. Pay it via Zelle to lburkut@seacadets.org. If you have a Chow subscription, please pay the difference of $13 per cadet.

At your earliest convenience, fill out this interest form to let us know if you plan on attending this drill to help us plan - https://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLSfhnm91gMxoan3-oNOH6pkGXrzxLyWcS4MU-vayBH-IST-tHQ/viewform?usp=sharing.

SUMMER TRAINING. We are all waiting for them and hope to start seeing them next month in the Portal. I will post on Facebook with any training I hear about. To make your sign-up process easier,  take some time to go into your Parent Portal and go over PARENTS' ACTIONS under the cadet's profile. Make sure your insurance card and physical/immunization are up to date. If you received an email from the admin last week, you have some things to address. No cadet will be approved for training without a complaint profile. Lastly, ensure your cadets are ready for the PRT next month!
