On August 10-11, Sea Cadet 9-1-1 Division kicked off their 2024-25 season by welcoming cadets to Van Patten Woods Forest Preserve on Saturday.
Cadets received their new company assignments and staff cadet billets.
After that 9-1-1 Division learned Basics of Land navigation and participated in team activities. Cadets had the amazing opportunity to learn the basics of land navigation and map reading from US Army Sgt. Keyser! 🌲📍 From understanding terrain features to using a compass, they gained essential skills to help them find their way, both in the field and in life.
Groups of cadets took their newly learned land navigation skills straight into the wilderness! Equipped with maps and compasses, they put theory into practice, navigating challenging terrain and building confidence along the way.
Meanwhile, SASP cadets showcased their skills at the Wisconsin Regional Competition! From precision shooting to teamwork, they demonstrated incredible dedication and sportsmanship throughout the event. And they placed first as a team too!
Saturday drill ended with a family picnic where cadets got to share their summer training experiences with fellow cadets.
On Sunday, the drill resumed at the Great Lakes Naval Station. Cadets spent Sunday practicing marching and Room Clearing during Visit Board Search and Seizure (VBSS) training led by Chief Petty Officer Frank Pontrelli USN (Ret). Cadets also learned why the Navy uses VBSS and taught VBSS tactics along with scenario-based Maritime Interdiction training.
